Another professional league in Germany to go with new streaming platform
Handball league LIQUI MOLY HBL to opt for S·Nation Media.
COLOGNE, JULY 12, 2022

The Presidential Board of Germany’s handball league (HBL) has decided that, as of the 2023/24 season, it intends to broadcast all the games of its top league (LIQUI MOLY HBL) and second league (2. HBL), as well as those of the DHB Cup competition, on S Nation Media’s new sports streaming platform. That will make it the fourth German professional sports league on the platform alongside Tischtennis Bundesliga TTBL (table tennis), Volleyball Bundesliga VBL (volleyball), and easycredit Basketball Bundesliga (basketball). The next step will be to conclude contractual negotiations between S Nation Media and LIQUI MOLY HBL. Final signing of the contracts covering all of HBL’s national media rights for six seasons – up to and including the 2028/29 season – is slated for the near future.

At the same time, the Cologne-based joint venture will gradually meet all the organizational and technical prerequisites to be able to present millions of German fans with their favorite sports live and in top quality as of the third quarter of 2023. Further decisions regarding TV production partners, for instance, will soon be made. A centerpiece of the new concept will be a cloud-based content desk. It will enable moving images to be transmitted quickly and easily, especially via social media channels and to media partners, and will significantly enhance both the relevance and reach of the partner leagues. To this end, S Nation Media will sign contracts with leading technology providers, who already deploy some of their technologies in professional leagues in the US. The company is also forging ahead to round off its team and, at the same time, is involved in media rights negotiations with further sports leagues.

“We are extremely gratified by the great trust the partner leagues are placing in us,” said Christian Seifert, founder and managing partner of S Nation Media. “Long-term agreements with four professional leagues are an excellent springboard for our goal of offering attractive sports other than football a bigger stage and broader media reach than ever before. We want to take these sports – together with their leagues, clubs, and fans – to the next level.”

About S Nation Media
The objective of the joint venture founded by Axel Springer and Christian Seifert – who was for many years CEO of DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga – is to create a new media home for the German fans of the leagues and sports beyond soccer. To this end, the company will for the first time bundle the audiovisual rights for attractive leagues and sporting events on one media platform. With high-quality production standards and intensive marketing support, the new streaming platform aims to enhance awareness and appreciation of underrepresented sports. Within just a few months, the company has signed media rights agreements with Germany’s table tennis, volleyball, and basketball leagues (Tischtennis Bundesliga TTBL, Volleyball Bundesliga VBL, and easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga). The next step will be to conclude contractual negotiations with LIQUI MOLY Handball Bundesliga. Final signing of the contracts is slated for the near future. The streaming platform will go live in Q3 2023.
